And then there were 2

Welcome... or should I say goodbye? This is going to be my second last blog for the sacred onesockdays. Enjoy now, weep later!

I have to be honest, I have not entirely enjoyed creating this daily blog; it has kind of been a drag. Everyday when I have finished my work, I think = UGH! Blog time! :-(. However, some days I have enjoyed; especially Silly Sundays!   The word 'diputseromneve' may look ridiculous. But backwards, it's even more stupid. That was my first ever joke from Silly Sundays no 1. It's not comedy gold but it will win awards someday. My history ones were fun at first but over time, they just became increasingly boring to write. My blogs about the Falkland war did take a long time but it was fun to learn about a war that was going on only 40 years ago. I will miss doing the blog (not really; this sucks!) but one day, it will be good to look back on what I did and what I learnt. The reason it is called onesockdays is because Lukey one sock is my nickname as I always go around the house wearing only one sock and we thought that I would constantly be wearing only one sock. And there you have it.

Welcome! Today is part 2 of Iceland. Enjoy!

Manmade

In Iceland, people are rather good at making things and that can be very useful in a lot of situations. One of the best hot spring is manmade! It is powered by nature though! Because of the terrain, the Icelandic people had to adapt to their country. It could have been building bridges that go over water or building churches like the monument of architecture in Reykjavik that is 74.5 metres tall and took 6 years to build. Very big! Another famous structure Iceland have created is the Harper. It is a concert hall in the capital that is made up from coloured glass facade inspired by the basalt landscape of Iceland. Icelandic people also like camouflage. All around the country, people have houses and shacks with grass on the top. They are called turf houses. They are houses that are covered by the landscape around them; all for a reason! At one point in history, Iceland couldn't seem to find a good insulation system when they realised that the grass and soil would work just fine!

Flag

The Icelandic flag is very similar to that of the other scandinavian flags. The flags usually consist of 2-3 colours with a cross off to the left side. Iceland's flag has a light, navy blue background with a red cross on the left side. The red cross os then surrounded by a thinner white cross, completing the flag. It was adopted in 1944 after it declared independence from Denmark.

Welcome to my blog! Today, we will be looking at the myth the man named Mario. Enjoy!

Have you ever heard of Mario? I bet you have! But do you know the voice behind him? Well, his name is Charles Martinet and he has been the voice of Mario, Luigi, Wario and even Donkey Kong for almost 30 years. He started working as an actor in many different genres of films but mainly comedies. He then made a few civilized adverts for the TV for a few different companies. Then an audition came up for Nintendo. Charles was late for it though, as he caught the people just as they were heading out the door. The people reluctantly gave Charles a go. He was told to think himself to be an Italian plumber living in Brooklyn named Mario. Charles didn't know what to say so he simply said: "It's a-me! MArio! Let's make some Pizza. You get the sausage; I'll get the spaghetti!" in a very heavy Italian accent just like the one we hear on Mario today!

Day 74 Lockdown - Iceland

Welcome. Today, we will be looking at some of my facts about Iceland. This is only a part one. Enjoy.

A small size of 103,000 km2 with a population of 364,134, Iceland is one of the most memorable places on earth. The rising and setting sun in the few hours of the day are so beautiful and calming in the cold months. Even though it is so small, Iceland is actually the 2nd largest island in Europe after the UK. Let's find out more.

Iceland is home to some of the roughest terrain on earth with mountains and large hills. Iceland is not home to just the terrain however; there are multiple other natural items that it holds captive that you wouldn't expect to find there. Surprisingly, they even have volcanoes that are active like Mount Hekla that has erupted 18 times since 1104, the last time being in 2000. Another natural item Iceland holds captive in their kingdom of cold are hot springs. Hveravellir is one of the most beautiful hot springs in all of Iceland. Located on a nature reserve that is considered “one of the last great wilderness areas” in all of Europe, this hotspot is speckled with bubbling water holes and smoking fumaroles. The massive landscape is filled with mountains and glaciers that you can even see from the capital Reykjavík.

Day 73 Lockdown - Slow writing

Welcome to a blog where I do some slow writing. This is writing with rules and description (not much of that in mine!). Enjoy!

Deserted out far in the ocean, 6 aged and ancient oil rigs stood, that are as rusty as can be, mindlessly producing mere hundreds of litres of oil a month. In the blink of an eye, a giant spurt of thick, black oil blocked the beating sun; they had found a sweetspot. They were lucky! They had some of the most powerful drills in the world that could dig down through the seabed as though a man ate meat. They would be rich... that is if they caught it! Suddenly, panic spread across all 6 of the rigs to find where they kept the barrels to store the oil. They might not even have any rickety, old and untrustworthy barrels left (maybe time to change your storage!). They struggled against the tidal wave of precious oil and eventually, the oil workers finally had that sweet taste of the finest riches.

1. A wife says to her programmer husband: Go to the supermarket and get a loaf of bread. If they have eggs, buy a dozen. Later, he returns with 12 loaves of bread.
2. I was just on an online diabetes awareness course and they asked me if I accept cookies. Is that a trick question?
3. Nothing ruins your Friday more than just being told that it's Thursday.
4. Some bloke just said he was going to attack with the neck of his guitar. I said: Is that a fret?
5. I've been a limo driver for 25 years and haven't had a single customer. All that time and nothing to chauffeur it.
6. How do people lose their kids in the mall? Seriously, any tips are welcome.
7. I went to a costume party dressed up as an alarm clock but left early in a bad mood. The people there kept winding up all night.
8. When I was a kid, I prayed to god for a bike. But then I realised that god doesn't work that way so I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.
9. I like waiters; they bring a lot to the table.
10. Apparently, you can't use beef stew as a password. It's not stroganoff.

Day 71 Lockdown - Holidays

Welcome to my blog! Today, I was talking to my mum when we thought about our holidays as we probably might not have one this year. We thought back over 10 years ago to when I first went on holiday to Canada. But let's see what holiday was my favourite in this list and enjoy!

1. My favourite holiday I've ever had was when I went to the Dominican Republic last October. It was my favourite because we got a special pass that meant we could go places that were limited from others. We even had a private butler even though he didn't do anything. The beach views were amazing as well as the dinners. Even when there was thunder and lightning, it was still a solid 20 degrees celsius. Even the 8 hour plane journey was fun (on the way back; that is a story for another day!). Overall, best ever holiday that I have been on.
2. My latest Austria trip was the best I have ever been on. Although I didn't have any friends with me, I made some and I had my grandparents with me and that meant we could have wonderful walks all round our resort. Everyday at varied times, you would wake, up get ready and ... play tennis! Not everyone had to play but you could pay for lessons that add to the hotel bill. At the end of every week, there would be a doubles tennis tournament. I have won 2/3 with other people. Overall, just amazing.
3. Italy was a memorable holiday because first it was for a wedding and second because of the beautiful beach that they had by the hotel. By the beach was a small coffee shop and ice cream bar that sold the best hot chocolate and the best ice cream EVER! Much of it I do not remember because I was only 3 but some of it is still distinctive in my memory. I remember going out in the sea but only a little bit to scuba dive although I was scared (and still am!) afraid of the fish. I also remember being told that I wasn't allowed to play volleyball with all the older men because... I don't know. Probably because I was too young. Anyway, top 3 for me!

Day 70 Lockdown - Crisps

Welcome to this blog! Today we will be looking at my favourite flavours of crisps and some some other wacky flavours. Enjoy!

We in our household love crisps. No matter what flavour they are (usually) we cannot pass up the offer to scoff crisps down. However, we all have different preferences on which type of crisps are the best. My dad likes spicy and I like exotic. My mum likes Salt and Vinegar! My mum will occasionally sneak crisps out the cupboard when me and my dad are away. But those days are usually on a Friday as we are allowed to eat crisps on that day and that day only. We want to save our crisps you see, and we decided that we should only have crisps on one day of the week. We decided that Friday is the best day of the week and so that is when we should have crisps on a Friday. I like Fridays because I feel relieved that the week is over and I have conquered it day by day. Now, I will share with you debatable the top ten crisp flavours of all time. Here we go!

1. Mix ups. These crisps can come in 2 different flavours (or so I know) either spicy or cheesy. We like spicy. The crisps are actually lots of different types of spicy crisps like Doritos and Cheetos and French Fries. They are delicious!
2. Sensations Lime and coriander chutney.
3. Bugles
4. Monster Munch
5. Doritos
6. Frazzles
7. Quavers
8. Discos
9. Wotsits
10. Nick Nacks

Day 69 Lockdown - C25k

Couch to 5k

Welcome to today's blog! Today, I will be sharing with you the growing subject of people training to run 5k. Enjoy!

Over 4-5 weeks ago, my mum and I started a little app called C25k (Couch to 5k) where you would run 3 times a week at different levels. There are multiple apps you can get too all with different levels. The firs week for us was to run for 60 seconds and then walk for 90 seconds. I was fine at this but my mum was struggling as she hadn't ran for a very long time (we took a DNA test and she's supposed to have genes of an elite athlete though). We did this eventually before we had a day's rest and then went for week 2 which was doubled that. week after week it got harder and harder before we now come up to date where my mum is running for 22 minutes straight. I however injured myself on the trampoline doing a sit jump (see blog number 43) when my leg went off the edge of the trampoline and my chin slammed into my chest. It hurt a lot and I might even have a broken rib for all I know! anyway, I stopped running and then 2 days ago, we decided that I should start from the beginning. Since I hadn't run for so long, level 1 was very hard; not to mention the giant pain in my chest. But I managed it and I did another run today and before long, I will be putting on my running shoes and heading out for my 3rd run this week. I think that everyone should at least get out once a week to do a run just like this or even harder.

Day 68 Lockdown - Gobstoppers

Welcome! Today, I will be sharing with the history of Gobstoppers or as the Americans call them, jawbreakers. Enjoy!

Gobstoppers or jawbreakers are a type of hard sweet. They are usually round, and usually range from 1 to 3 cm (0.4 to 1.2 in) across; though gobstoppers can be up to 8 cm (3.1 in) in diameter. The term Gobstopper comes from the UK and Irish slang for mouth which is gob. The sweet was a favourite among British schoolboys between World War I and World War II. In his 1964 children's book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, author Roald Dahl described "Everlasting Gobstoppers", a fictional type of gobstopper that could never get smaller or be finished. The gobstoppers consist of layers of... sugar! When you suck them, the layers will one by one disappear leaving a small possibly different fizzy layer. Gobstoppers have been sold in traditional sweet shops for at least a century, often sold by weight from jars. As gobstoppers dissolve very slowly, they last a very long time in the mouth, which is a major factor in their enduring popularity with children. Larger ones can take days or even weeks to fully dissolve. What a long time!

Day 67 Lockdown - The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Welcome! Today we will be looking at a summary of the first 2 chapters of Huckleberry Finn, a book from the 1800s. This book is a book I need to read by next year and it is very hard to understand but I hope you enjoy. XP!

Chapter 1:

Huck is introduced to the reader along with the Widow and Miss Watson. Huck heard that his friend was starting a band of robbers so Huck thought he might join but he returns home late to find the Widow weeping over him. The Widow teaches Huck about Moses and the bulrushes. Huck snuck out late the next day to find Tom Sawyer waiting for him. Tom thought up the gang in case you didn't know.

Chapter 2:

Huck and the other lads who wanted to be in the gang met up in a cave where they swore an oath that meant if you told any secrets, your family would be killed along with them. Jim, Miss Watson's slave, is convinced the devil has spoken to him and given him a 5 cents coin before witches came and took him away.

Day 66 Lockdown - Bank Holidays

Welcome to my blog! Today, we will be looking at why we have bank holidays. Enjoy!

Bank holidays were first introduced by a man named Sir John Lubbock who was a scientific writer, banker and politician, and the first Baron of Avebury. (He is also reported to have studied ants and tried to teach his poodle how to read!). In 1871, he drafted the Bank Holiday Bill. When it became law, he created the first official bank holidays. Initially, it was just banks and financial buildings that would close, which is where the name comes from. But as time went on, businesses, shops, schools and the government all joined in.


People don't have to take off a bank holiday if they don't want to - it all depends on their job contract.
Royalty can also add extra bank holidays whenever they want if they feel like it. For example, the millennium bank holiday on 31 December 1999 and the Golden Jubilee bank holiday on Monday 3 June 2002 were extra special days when many adults got an extra day off work.

Day 64 Lockdown - Games

Welcome! Today is about to bring you a little review on my favourite games. This is also the blog on which I will catch up to the right date on. Enjoy!

1. Fortnite: I love this game and even though some parents might disagree, I think it is good for kids. There are silly things involved like dancing as well as some calculation which is needed especially for long range. You also have to learn to conserve materials and ammo. For me, 10/10 game.
2. Roblox: Roblox is a game that is very fun because there are over a million games you can play on it. They can be games that are similar to Fortnite or games that allow you to work at a pizza place. This game gets a 11/10 from me! Heh heh.
3. NHL: NHL stands for national hockey league as it is only for American and Canadian teams. If you have heard of Fifa, this is almost the same but only it is ice hockey. There are so many different game modes and so many different teams. My only bad comment is that at some times, your character can get in fights just like real hockey so it might not be for children under the age of 7. 9/10.
4. Fifa: I explained above that this game is similar to NHL although it has just a few less game modes. My favourite thing about fifa is that you can play a mode called career mode where, you guessed it, you take on a career as a manager or a player for any team you like. Great for young and older people who love football. 9/10.
5. Madden: This game is literally the same as the previous 2 but only this time, it is about American football. Everything is super fun except when you get this thing called input delay which means when you press a button, it might take a few more seconds before something actually happened. Again brilliant for all American football fans who also love video games. 8/10.

Day 63 Lockdown - Bicycles

Welcome! Today, I will tell you about a quick bicycle ride which happens to be only the 2nd this lockdown. Enjoy!

At 2 o'clock this afternoon, me and my friends who live next door and down the road went on a cycle ride which is perfect for the current weather. We have so many different routes to take that are all as fun as each other. We decided to take the route just at the end of the road where my old friend used to live. We then went up a small hill before zooming down the other side. Another short climb later, as expected, we came to a gate leading to a field that my family calls the heath; my favorite part about it is that there is this little oval shaped sand track that my dog shares passion for too. There is also a miniature lake that is surprisingly deep. We then turned round back the way we came but took a right turn to enter a more woodland area were others had previously built shelters out of logs and big sticks. We put our bikes down there and ran around, laughed, chatted and had a good time. We then rode back on our bikes to a gate at the end of the field were we then travelled up to the closest village to us named Pirbright which is where I currently go to school. We went past a pub, the butchers and the park before we rode on a long strip of pathway until we reached home. Tomorrow, we might even go to a shooting range that is rarely used for a dog walk; it has a giant sand bank that we all like to climb up onto. All in all, it was great fun and I would love to do it again soon!

Welcome to my blog! Today, I will be sharing with you a 2 part piece of schoolwork that my school set me. Enjoy!

There was once a family who bought a slave from a market in the centre of a city. He wasn't the first slave the family had bought; all the others had either run away or tried to harm their owner because of the way he treated them. However, this slave was special. He began his first day on a Monday where he was tasked to do 12 jobs in 30 minutes. They weren't easy jobs either; they were jobs like harvest all the crops and bake bread. When the slave heard the jobs, and the consequences, he merely smiled and said that at least the gods were on his side before he was slapped across the face with an eel. A family tradition with all the other slaves the family had owned. 

A few jobs later, the comedic slave heard a rustle in the bushes that he had just cleared behind him. He tiptoed over to them when he saw a giant and large lizard. The slave reached out to grab it before it scuttled away; the slave was mesmerized by it and dumbly he dropped his tools and pursued it. It took him over fields, down rivers, through dense forests and mini deserts before they came to a temple surrounded by fields of grain, pumpkins, orchards of apple trees and peaceful workers and worshipers to the god that was clearly the patron of seeds. The slave had come here once before for a sacrificial ceremony where he had sneakily escaped to a quiet room to worship the god Bolon Tz'akab. The god had taken a liking to him for leaving the ceremony to worship alone. The large lizard suddenly paused in front of a giant statue of the god tending to his wheat fields. From a door hidden behind the statue, a figure emerged with a vine of grapes and an apple. He told the slave that he had summoned him here to his temple. The god laid the food down in front of the slave and told him to eat. Little did the slave know that this was a challenge to prove if he was worthy of help; he needed help with stabalising the family that owned him.

• I keep trying to lose weight but it just keeps finding me.

Welcome! Today brings some riddles that I have gathered. So... enjoy!

1. The poor have it; the rich need it; if you eat it, you will die. What am I? Nothing.
2. On the first day of school, in the morning, a teacher murdered a child. The police found 4 suspects: the gardener, the chef, the maths teacher and the headmaster. Each had their own alibis. The gardener said he was cutting the hedges outside with his secuters; the chef said hes was chopping up the meat for lunch; the maths teacher said he was collecting in the mid-year test; the headmaster said he was clearing out his office. The police immediately knew who was the murderer but who and how did they know? The maths teacher because it was the first day of school and he said he was collecting in the mid-year test.
3. I am once in a minute, twice in a moment and never in a thousand years. What am I? M.
4. Two girls were going into a forest looking for apples when suddenly, a thunderstorm started up. The girls found a shack to stay in and they camped there until the storm passed. When they came outside, the girls decided to split up to find some apples. One of the girls found an orchard of apple trees and choose to eat one before she turned into a tree! When the other girl came looking for her friend, she came across an orchard of apple trees and a strange old man who told her that her friend turned into a tree and that she only had 3 guesses until her friend got stuck. The girl took a look around and spotted her immediately. How? It had been raining and all the other trees were wet.
5. A man is born in 2000 and died in 1950. How? It was the BC time.

Day 56 Lockdown - McDonald's

Welcome! Today is a very strange anniversary for a restaurant you might know called McDonald's. Enjoy!

It has been 80 years since the first ever McDonald's restaurant opened on this day. Richard James and Maurice James McDonald opened a fast food restaurant or what they called a 'Speedee Service System' to sell food that was tasty and fast to acquire. With a condensed menu consisting of hamburgers, cheeseburgers, potato chips, apple pie, soft drinks and coffee, in 1948 Richard and Maurice - known as Dick and Mac - renamed their establishment, christening it McDonald's. In addition to reducing their menu, the McDonald's brothers also simplified their Speedee Service System to something more understandable and more modern - Fast Food. Now, I love McDonald's. And now, even though all this virus thing is happening, you can get it again! Today as a coincidence, 30 Maccy D's - as we know it - have reopened their drive thrus meaning that you can taste dem lovely chicken McNuggets once again. Or you could have a delicious burger or apple pie. But this is all so those wonderful, front-line workers can enjoy food if nothing else. If in doubt, have a Maccy D's! Also you can get your mouth watering fast food via apps like just eat. My typical menu would be:

• A double cheeseburger with no salad but added ketchup and bacon
• Small fries
• Any fizzy drink - usually Oasis though
• Vanilla Milkshake

Day 55 Lockdown - The legion of Warships 2

Welcome! Today brings a fabulous thank you and well done to everyone who participated in my battleships tournament. Today, I will announce the winners and show you the new type of league that we are starting. Enjoy!

The winners of my battleships league are: Alexander P, Rowan G and Telemachus C. This was by cause of amazingly good skill to make the 3-way final a 3-person winner. In the first final match, the teams were Alexander VS Rowan and after some intense battling and funny talks, Rowan came out victorious. Next up was Telemachus VS Rowan and some more intense battleships later, Telemachus came out on top. The final game of the finals was Telemachus VS Alexander. Day 54 Lockdown - Round the globe

Welcome! Today brings a kind of part 2 to blog number 49. Enjoy!

1. In Chicago, USA, horse-drawn carriages are to be banned from the city by 2021. The announcement was made after the city council voted not to issue any carriage licences from the start of next year, or renew old ones. The horse-drawn carriages are popular with tourists but some people believe it to be a cruel way to treat horses. 
2. The US Women's football team has been dismissed a case on equal pay throughout the team. The women believe that they are being underpaid compared to the men's team. They have accused the US soccer federation for under pay but the judge merely told them that they are paid the same as the men. SCAM!
3. In Londinières, France, grey wolves have returned for the first time in over 100 years. Wolves disappeared around that area and Normandy in the 19th century and from the whole of France in 1930 because of hunting. They started to re-enter France from Italy in the 1990s when they crossed the Alps.
4. In Iceland, one of the strongest men on the world has broken a record. On 2nd May, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson set a world record when he deadlifted 501 kilograms at a gym in Iceland. A deadlift is when someone lifts weight in a standing position without any support. Bjornsson, who weighs 205kg, was named the world's strongest man in 2018. 
5. In Berlin, Germany, climate protests have been staged. In the capital, protesters have found a way to continue their demonstrations over climate change, despite the Covid-19 outbreak consequences. Climate change refers to long term weather changes that are unusual compared to before. On 24th April, volunteers from the Fridays for Future group laid out messages along the ground of the city. Amazing isn't it!

Day 52 Lockdown - Bookworms

Welcome to my blog! Today is a blog about my top 5 book recommendations for the children that are in no particular order of my favourites. Enjoy!

1. Alex Rider. I know this isn't a book but it is a series which a matter of fact, is my favourite. It is about a boy named Alex Rider who's parents had already parted from the word by a bomb on an aeroplane.
2.  Young Sherlock: Knife Edge. This book is also from a series about a young Sherlock Holmes. In this book, he and his brother travel to a cliff edge hotel/ house/ business that claims it can talk to the dead spies in the world; that would cause problems for all intelligence agencies over Europe. The question is, can Sherlock and his brother Mycroft save the day?
3. Football School: Season 2 Where Football saves the world. This is such a great book in which you can learn amazing things about a lot of things, not only football. As an example, I read it and discovered that the Indian Prime Minister drinks his own urine but there are facts about football like, Leicester FC can mow the football pitch up to three times a day! Overall, such a great book and there are 3 in total. So much for me to read!
4. Bad Dad. This book is a bit young for me but at the time I read it, I felt inspired by what Mr Walliams wrote and I found the story very thrilling. It is very exciting especially during the robbery and I think many lines are comedy gold. Again, great book.
5. Last but not least, Kensuke's Kingdom. This book is one the best books I have ever read. It is all about a boy from 1999 who gets washed up on an island where there is only one other inhabitant: Kensuke. It is said that he was a doctor for the imperial Japanese army who survived WWII by escaping to a random island but he is convince that he could never return to Japan for he has no-one to go to as he thinks his family were killed by the Atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki in 1945. Kesuke and the boy, Michael, have to help one another get off the island so they can go home. Overall, "10/10" book.

8. Which country's capital is growing the fastest? Ireland's - every year, it's Dublin!
9. I was playing chess with my friend and he said, "Let's make this interesting,". So we stopped playing chess.
10. What do you call a cow that can't produce milk? An udder failure!

Day 50 Lockdown - Legion of Warships week 1 results

Welcome! Today will show you a quick results page of the past weeks battleships results.  A fair amount of results for the games were played and enjoyed, battling it out for the winning spot in their league and the chance to go through to the finals.
