Round The World
Welcome back! Today brings something slightly different blog. I will be telling you 5 different facts from around the world. Enjoy!
- In Hallormsstadur Forest, Iceland, people are being advised to hug trees instead of others. The forestry service in Iceland says people should hug trees during the Covid-19 outbreak. They say that it is a great alternative to hugging people, which is not allowed. Rangers in the forest have cleared snow to form paths that lead to the trees so peeps can get closer to them. Forest manager Thor Thorfinnsson said, "You get such a good relaxing feeling."
- In California, USA, bears are having a party without humans. The bears in Yosemite National Park have found a new sense of freedom while the park is closed to visitors. The park is home to 300-500 black bears that are roaming free because of the Covid-19 outbreak. Katie Patrick, who works at the park, says that the bears are having a 'party' and have been walking on roads and pavements since they are empty.
- In France, a teenager from Iran defeated the chess world champion Magnus Carlsen. The 16 year old Alireza Firouzja played against Carlsen in the final of the Banter Blitz cup on 15th April. Carlsen has been champion since 2013 but did indeed admit that the teenager was 'devilishly tricky' to play against. Alireza became a grandmaster in chess when he was 14 years old!
- In Greece, there has been new homes for child migrants. On 15th April, 12 unaccompanied children from migrant centres have been flown to new homes in Luxembourg. Many of the children fled from war and violence and many of the children were originally from Syria or Afghanistan and were mostly aged from 11-15. There are plans to give another 1,600 children homes to those who need them. There are around 5000 children living in in camps.
- In Egypt, Tutankhamun's golden coffin is being restored as best as possible. When he was 9 years old, king Tutankhamun became pharaoh in 1333 BC. He was only 18 when he died and he was buried in Egypt near where he was born. His tomb was was found in 1922 along with his golden mask. A museum is being built and is due to open next year with the mask.
