Day 14 Lockdown - St George's Day 23th April

St George's Day

Very soon, England will be celebrating the annual St George's day. Just why do we do that and what does it mean? Who was St George and what did he do to get his own special day? Today, we will be looking at those questions and answering them. I hope you enjoy!

According to a legend, St George was a Roman soldier, born in Turkey, or at that time, Eastern Thrace in 280 AD. He was born to a wealthy Christian family but except for that, there are no records of his early life. The Roman Empire was in full swing so when he became the age of 16, he joined the army.

One day, George was taking a trip to Libya when he stumbled across a king's daughter who was headed for a dragon. Let's rewind.... a plagued dragon in Libya is eating all the humans. Humans offer the dragon 2 sheep a day in exchange for not eating the people. Eventually, humans run out of sheep so they create a lottery system where children's names get pulled out of a hat to see if they get to be eaten by the dragon. Then the king's daughter is chosen. That's where we catch up. St George said he would slay the dragon if everyone turned to Christianity; they all did and George slayed the dragon. The Libyan king is friends with the English king who heard all about George and seemed to like him. George then fought in many battles for England before the king made him the patriot saint of England.

In the year 303AD, the emperor ordered all Christian soldiers to be expelled from the army for certain reasons. George refused to step down and he confidently declared he was Christian to the emperor. The emperor tried to make deals with our man.....  like trading land and riches for his place in the army. St George wouldn't trade so on 23rd April 303AD, George was beheaded just like that......and we celebrate in his honour!
