Day 35 Lockdown - Fascinating Facts Friday!

Walter Yeo - WikipediaFascinating Facts

Friday!

Welcome to my blog! Today is a friday meaning that I will be telling you some awesome feats but this time from a different book. I hope you are disgusted!

Walter Yeo was one of the first people on earth to receive innovative skin graft surgery in 1917. The 27 year old sailor from the 1st world war sustained facial burn injuries, losing his upper and lower eyelids while in battle manning the guns aboard the HMS Warspite in 1916. A year later, Sir Harold Gillies performed the medical procedure, grafting a flap of skin across Walter's face and eyes like a mask, thereby giving him new eyelids. Walter's new kind of skin graft, called the 'tubed pedicle graft,' involved lifting a flap of skin and moving it to a new area, while keeping one end attached to the body and stitching part of it into a tube so that the original blood flow was kept intact. This reduced the infection rate, as antibiotics had not been invented yet. In Walter's case, his skin was moved from his chest to his face.

Documents show that Walter's condition improved, although he still had severe disfigurement. After further treatment at the Royal Naval Hospital in Plymouth in 1938, nothing else is known about him.
